About the Florida Forum for Progressive Policy

A forum is a place to learn and exchange ideas.

What passes for dialogue on policy today is a frightening combination of sound bites and television rugby scrums by political partisans. I would like a more rational source. And I know people from both political parties who agree.

The goal of our forum is to discuss principles and ideas in a setting where reason and research are actually valued.

We assume that intelligent policies can make our lives and our children's lives better. Cynicism can be entertaining but not terribly useful. We believe we can learn from the past and not fear confronting the future.

The point of departure is that democracy works best when citizens participate and are informed. This forum is a two- way street. We will share news from around the state and ideas from various political perspectives. This is a big state. We will assemble links to the best news articles, editorials and studies so you can decide for yourself.

Florida is a dynamic and exciting place with a fascinating past, unlimited potential and an uncertain future.

Does this forum have a certain perspective? Yes

  • Individual liberty is the cornerstone of democracy.
  • Mutual respect and acceptance is central to a successful community.
  • Every person deserves an opportunity to succeed through education.
  • Families deserve to be secure in their homes and communities.
  • A dynamic and successful economy is indispensable to the success of the state.
  • Current citizens have a duty to protect Florida's natural assets for our children.

Through history we have had successes and failures in each of these areas. We should learn from both. The future can be a dismal morass unless you and I take some personal responsibility.

The internet provides us with an unprecedented opportunity. When Thomas Paine printed pamphlets to communicate ideas he could reach a few thousand people. We can reach tens of thousands with thoughtful ideas that will work.

If you are tired of what passes for political dialogue, join the Forum, contribute ideas and pass it on.
